"Having someone to love is family. Having somewhere to go is home. To have both is a blessing." Unknown ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * Thank goodness it's Spring! I noticed some daffodils on our way to the bus stop this morning. They are so beautiful! Too bad it was raining like cats and dogs at the time. This month I've included two articles that I hope will inspire you and possibly make you laugh. Hopefully both! The first article is called "Moms Have Super Powers". Love the title! I remember sitting in the back seat of the car fighting with my brother and my mom told me to stop while she was driving. Of course, being a little kid I wondered how she even saw me; to which she replied that she had eyes in the back of her head. The second article that is included this month is about growing a victory garden. Something I truly enjoy and think everyone should have. So enjoy this month's newsletter and have a wonderful month! They even have super powers. It has not been determined if they are born with these powers or if they come from a reaction to toxic waste (in the form of diapers) or other chemicals. All that is certain is that moms can do things normal humans can not. 1. A mom can hold a diaper bag, purse, baby and cupcakes with out spilling a thing - just don't offer to take anything or it will all come tumbling down. 2. A mom can go for several nights on five minute cat naps between upset children, cleaning the garbage can and changing the sheets! The amazing thing is that she won't need a nap the next day. 3. A mom can hear the kids asking questions while answering an email while talking on the phone - and not miss a beat. It goes beyond multitasking to an almost computer like ability to comprehend information and then respond. 4. A mom can hear a problem before it arises - she knows when that gagging noise is going farther and is prepared before anything can happen. It is not just about the noise, but knowing response time AND knowing how to respond. 5. A mom can recognize a look and know immediately that the child broke something, hit someone or is just "taking a break." She also has eyes in the back of her head so that she can see the pushing and shoving without having to SEE the pushing and shoving. 6. A mom can make any needed item magically appear from either the car, her purse or the diaper bag. It doesn't matter if it is nail clippers, a screw driver or band aids - she has access to it all in the snap of a finger. There are things that can drag a mom down - every super hero has her kryptonite. But for the most part the mom is going to know the who, the what, the why, the when and the how long before the situation arises. It's just part of being a mom. Have you noticed how expensive your favorite produce has become at the local market? Even worse is the bland taste of things like sweet corn and tomatoes. Those veggies are supposed to be fresh and juicy! There is one way to ensure that the freshness is always there. Start your own victory garden! Hold on there hoss! What is a victory garden? During World War II we were encouraged to grow our own vegetables in order to save the canned goods for our fighting men and women. The term 'Victory Garden' was coined to describe the small areas set up in backyards across the nation where families grew there own crops of favorite vegetables. Today, our victory will be over high prices, and keeping our families safe from unwanted chemicals and pesticides used in processing the produce found on the store shelves. Victory gardens are not difficult to set up and maintain. You can start with a small space, say 4' by 4', and plant favorites like green onions, lettuce and radishes. Tomatoes are another favorite, and there are several varieties to choose from. If you have enough space you can set up larger gardens to grow things like green beans, sweet peas, and zucchini. Potatoes and sweet corn are other popular vegetables for the victory gardens. You may want to plant a few herbs, like basil, chives, parsley and sage. Using fresh picked herbs will add some remarkable flavor to your favorite dishes. To add a little color to the dining table, fresh flowers can be included in any well planned victory garden. You can start your own victory garden, and you will not need a green thumb to make it successful. If this will be your first attempt at gardening, start small, and add on as you gain experience. Not only will you be providing healthier vegetables to your family diet, you will also save hundreds of dollars each year as produce at the grocery continues to rise. Have fun, eat healthy, and save money! What a terrific combination! Check out every thing you need to start and maintain a Victory Garden here!
