Happy Valentine's Day!

Sorry this newsletter is late! We have had a really crazy and stressful month! Hospital visits, birthday parties with 17 screaming kids, and getting taxes done. Needless to say, I'm glad January is over :)

To relieve stress doctors recommend exercising regularly. One really fun way I've found is the Wii Fit, so I've included an article showing how beginners can exercise while having fun.

My second article covers the cost effectiveness of moms going back to work. If you are one of the many families struggling and you are considering going back to work - you need to read this one.

Enjoy this month's newsletter and have a wonderful Valentine's Day and month!

Kim

Beginners Get Fit with Wii Fit

With 2/3 of Americans considered obese, the Wii Fit is an excellent tool to get people moving. It is perfect for people just starting an exercise regime, embarrassed to attend weekly meetings, or too busy to go to the gym a couple times a week.

It's Fun
First of all, the Wii Fit is fun. Seriously, try not to laugh when your Mii (your character) is getting hit in the head with a stuffed panda head or soccer shoe. Plus, when was the last time you saw your Aunt Sue hula hoop? What about your kids trying to balance on one foot without falling?

Makes You Sweat
You may be thinking, "Can I really get a decent workout with a video game?". Well the answer is yes! You get easily break a sweat while hula hooping for 3 minutes straight or jogging around on the Wii Fit Island. There is also boxing and step aerobics mini games.

Easy to Use
It is easy to use at any age. Whether your 5 or 75. The game records your weight, BMI, tracks how many minutes you've been training, when you worked out last, and even provides motivational tips. There are easy to follow demos or directions for every game. All you need to do is pick and chose which mini games you want to try.

Variety of Games
All games help improve your balance, flexibility and strength - something almost every American could improve on. There are yoga moves, strength training, aerobics, and balance games. Almost anything you could do in a gym you can do on your Wii Fit including boxing, step aerobics, jogging, yoga, and lots, lots more.

Better than a Gym
The absolutely best reason Wii Fit is perfect for beginners is you can use it in the privacy of your own home. No need to pay for expensive gym memberships and then drive there a couple times a week. You don't have to feel self-conscience working out in front of others. There's no big, bulky equipment to buy. Plus, no meetings with embarrassing weigh-ins.

Wii Fit has all the elements to get you started with an exercise regime. It will make you sweat and get your heart pumping. It has a variety of games to choose from, so you won't lose interest fast. You won't need to travel to a gym or pay those pricey monthly dues because it can be done in the comfort of your home. Best of all, it's fun and easy to use.

Can You Afford to Go Back to Work?

Is money getting tight? Are bill collectors calling you day and night? Have your friends or relatives started making snide remarks about how you should get a job and help out with the bills? Every mom knows that being a mom is not a 9-5 job--it's more like a 24 hour job, but that's another argument all together.

If money is getting tight you may be considering going back to work outside the home. Maybe your family only needs a couple hundred dollars more each month to get by or to get caught up. Sometimes, it's easier for your family if you to stay at home and cut costs or sell something to lower monthly payments. However, when this is not possible or feasible consider the following before you accept a job outside the home.

Cost of Child Care
First thing to consider is child care. If your children are grown, you have relatives who can watch your kids for free, your hubby and you work alternating shifts, or they are legally allowed to stay home unsupervised than great--skip this item. However, if you have young or elementary school age kids you need to think about who is going to watch your kids. There are lots of options including full-time day care in a facility, at an in-home daycare, have a nanny come to your home, or before and after school care. This can be a deal breaker for a lot of moms because day care can run $100 a month up to a couple hundred. Even before and after school care can be pricey. It's $250 a month in my area for one kid, and we have 3 kids. Ouch! You need to make sure that the amount you will bring home will more than cover the cost of child care.

Transportation
The next thing to consider is your transportation costs. Gas, bus, taxi, train and subway fares are all things to consider. Those fees add up. Ideally, you want to try to find a job close to home, but if a job pays considerably more and is farther away take it! Try carpooling. If gasoline prices are high in your area; consider taking a bus or train over driving your own vehicle. The last thing you want is to pay out $50 in gas each week only to receive a check worth $100 after taxes.

Clothes/Uniforms
The last item to consider is the cost of uniforms and clothes. Many business require you to wear uniforms or dressy clothes. If you haven't been a member of the workforce for years, this could be costly. Not to mention, some dress clothes need to be dry cleaned which can be costly.

These are just a few things to consider before accepting a position. Simply make sure you are going to actually make some money and not spend it all on child care, gasoline, and clothes. Now don't get me wrong, I'm in no way suggesting you stay home just because you don't want to work. I'm also not suggesting you be a mooch and expect everyone to take care of you. This article is meant to help moms determine the minimum amount of money you need to cover the cost of child care, transportation and other job related expenses prior to accepting a position.
