Speaking of New Year's Resolutions check out my first lens on Squidoo at http://www.squidoo.com/KeepYourResolutions . It was completely fun and now I think I'm hooked. Since this is the beginning of a new year, now is a great time to get your finances under control if they aren't already. The second article this month talks about setting up a family budget. Even if you have your money under control, setting up a budget will help you see where all your money goes.

Enjoy this month's newsletter and have Happy New Year!

How to Keep Your New Year's Resolutions

Like most people I write out my New Year's Resolutions each year. However, I'm usually able to stick with my goals unlike most people who quit 2 weeks to 2 months into the year. How do I do it? Well, it's not rocket science.

First, put your goals/resolutions in writing. Write your goals like they have already happened. More importantly write SMART goals.
S - Specific or simple
M - measurable and meaningful
A - action-oriented, attainable and appropriate
R - realistic and relevant
T - time-based and trackable

Next, review your goals often. Each week as you're planning out the week ahead, include a small step or two that you can take that would move you toward reaching your goal. For example, if you want to lose 20lb in 2009, plan to walk for 15 minutes 2-3 days this week. Then up the amount of time each week or so. Same is true if you want to quit smoking. If going cold turkey is out of the question, try holding out an extra 15 minutes or 30 minutes. Increase the time between smoke breaks each week or so.

Finally, remember slow and steady wins the race! Many people try to jump in with both feet - going all out. Such as working out 5 days a week for 1 hr a day when you never exercised before, trying not to eat any food when you live off take out, or quit smoking cold turkey. Everyone can use some help and support. It's better to reach your goal a little slower than you wanted than to never reach your goal at all.

What are you waiting for? Today is a new day. A new beginning.

Remember, be specific with your resolutions. Review your goals often, and most importantly slow and steady really does win the race! Follow these simple techniques and you are sure to stick with your resolutions.

How to Create a Family Budget

Creating a budget plan for your family will enable you to maximize earnings while ensuring that all needs are met. To some, it is a stressful task. However, it is more stressful when you are having difficulty trying to make both ends meet. Aside from that, money problems can often be a root for relationship problems within the family. This is normal, knowing that the level of stress and anxiety are high.

Why Is Family Budget Important?

Money is continually flowing, which is one reason why most people neglect budgeting since they always believe that money will arrive. What if it does not? You need to make maximum use of your finances to ensure that you are spending where needed.

This is doubly important for families because there are so many priorities involved. Here are just a few reasons why a family budget is important:

- it allows you to maximize your earnings
- you can save money for future use
- no stress
- there is more harmony within the family
- it gives you a feeling of satisfaction that you have spent your money well

How To Start A Budget Plan

The best way to get started on a family budget is to assume a healthy financial perspective. Although budget is intended for the future, you need to realize that it is based on your spending habits now. Before starting on creating a budget, analyze where your money comes and how you spend it. Keeping track of your income and expenses will give you a better glimpse on how you'd be able to create a realistic budget plan.

Here are a few pointers you might want to consider to create an efficient budget plan for the family:

- the income
- how much savings you want to produce (or is able to produce) each month
- your household expenses
- do you always fall short on your budget
- do you openly talk with your partner regarding money issues

Once you have looked into these various factors, then you will have a better idea on how to approach your budget plan.

Regaining Control Over Your Finances

By properly organizing your family's spending habits in accordance with your family's income, you will become more organized in your budgeting process. Take note of all bills and even the tiniest expenses such as a bottle of shampoo or a bar of soap. Unless you do that, you will never be able to create an efficient plan that will cover for all of your expenses.

Then, create a sample budget plan. For this stage to effectively work, you need to discuss it with the rest of the family members so they can be aware. Making them more aware of the need to budget your expenses well, they can take their own personal steps that will help alleviate money problems within the family.

Once you have finalized the family budget plan, you need to write it down. This will enable you to have something to consult from time to time. Also, this will remind you of what your spending priorities are. When you're family has adjusted to your budget plan, you can plan your budget for the coming year. Creating an advanced family budget will enable you to cope with seasons that require a lot of expenses such as holidays or for the children's schooling.
