Happy Saint Patrick's Day!

One thing that everyone needs to do this year (and every year for that matter) is to remain optimistic and hopeful. Try to limit your exposure to the news because so much of it is about violence, fighting, job losses, money troubles, and the like right now. Focus on the positive in your life and the lives of those around you. Here's a quote that I love "Sorry looks back, Worry looks around, Faith looks up" author unknown. Keep looking up!

I've included two articles this month that I thought will be of use to some of you. The first article discusses something I've personally had to start doing this month. It's keeping track of personal medical information. Whether it's for yourself, your husband, your parents or kids. How many times have you left the doctors office only to wonder what in the world they just said or what in the world is this prescription for? Well, these tips will help you get on the same page as your doctor(s).

My second article covers how to de-stress and sleep better. No one can avoid stress all together, but what you need to do is let go of the stress once it happens. Think a nice hot bubble bath, some candles, and soft music.

Enjoy this month's newsletter and have a wonderful month!

Kim

Now, What Did The Doctor Say Again?

Have you ever left your doctor's office wondering "What did he/she say again?" or thinking "Do doctors really expect me to know what all these medical terms mean?"

Well if you have ever left the doctors office confused you're not alone. Nowadays, people are having to visit multiple doctors for different problems. The problem is not all doctors communicate with each other in a timely fashion. So here are 3 easy ways to make sure that you and your doctors are getting up to the minute information and neither one of you is confused.

Bring a Friend
Ask a close friend or family member to come with you. Besides offering moral support, they can be put in charge of asking the questions or reminding you to ask them. They may also be a great witness to symptoms you are having but aren't aware of. For example: forgetfulness, becoming pale, speaking incoherently, etc.

Keep a Medical Journal/Notebook
Record everything that you can remember from every doctor's visit either during or immediately after the visit. Also, jot down every illness so you can mention it to your doctor at your next visit. Sometimes symptoms such as a fever, colds, or headaches could help your doctor figure out what is currently going on.

Be sure to include in your notes:
  • the date of the appointment or the illness,
  • doctor's name, address and phone number,
  • reason for the visit,
  • any medications prescribed and what they are for,
  • follow-up appointment information, and
  • any other notes you can remember.

Ask the doctor how to spell medical terms or at least spell them phonetically, so if you need to you can research the term later if you want. Let's face it, a lot of the medical terms used today are long and many look and sound alike.

Ask Questions! Speak Up!
Don't be afraid to ask questions when you want more information or you just don't understand something that was said. If you feel uncomfortable - get your friend or family member to ask for you. Remember it's your life - stand up and defend it! If you feel something is wrong, that the doctor isn't taking your seriously, or you just don't feel right - say something. Speak up!

Following these easy tips will help you and your doctor and your appointments go as productive as possible. Bringing a friend, keeping a journal of your medical history, and asking questions will help you have a clearer picture of your own medical situation. Remember, you should never leave your doctors office more confused than when you went in.

4 Ways to De-Stress and Sleep Better

Almost everyone knows the benefits of a good night's sleep. Increased energy. Ability to think clearly. These are just two of the many health benefits available, yet far too many people get less than 7 hours of sleep a night. They are constantly stressed - worrying about jobs, money, relationships and more.

Here are a four simple ways to de-stress and get a better night's sleep, and they don't cost a fortune.

Journaling
One of the easiest things you can do is to keep a journal. Now don't feel intimidated this is actually super easy. Get yourself a notebook. It can be a cheap spiral notebook or a fancy leather journal. They both work the same. Write one paragraph or an entire page or more. It's up to you.

In your journal write everything that happened in the world and your life specifically that influenced you that day. All your happy times, stressful moments, and worries - everything good and bad. I call this "downloading" or "dumping" everything that is running through your mind. Once you write it down forget about it.

List Making
Have you have tried to go to sleep, but could get your mind to shut off? Well, the second thing to do is keep a written to-do list. Before you go to bed each night list everything you want to do tomorrow or didn't get done today. This can get all things off your mind plus you'll be less likely to forget something.

Turn off the Electronics
Today's society stresses the importance of being connected all the time and getting as much done as possible. So many of us are glued to our cell phones almost 24 hours a day. Plus, there are those who stay online late into the night just surfing with no real reason.

Disconnecting is another great way to de-stress. Turn off your cell phone, internet and tv for a day or even a couple hours. Take that time to relax, go for a walk, or read a book. Do something you enjoy doing. Seriously, the world isn't going to stop just because you turned off your cell phone. People survived for thousands of years without a cell phone and you can certainly survive a couple hours.

Exercise
Perhaps the most beneficial way to de-stress and sleep better would be to exercise. By getting some moderate exercise throughout the day you will improve your health. Plus it is proven that people who exercise regularly report fewer instances of sleeplessness and it is been shown to reduce stress.

These are just a few ways to help improve the quality of your sleep and help you get over the stress in your life. Start living a healthier and more relaxed lifestyle today.

Tips for Success
Create an emergency fund. It's easier than you may think. Setting aside $5-$10 a week. Put it in a jar or savings account. You never know when the fridge will go up, car breaks down, or you get unexpected doctor bills. Even if you can't save a whole lot at least you'll have something to put towards your emergency.
