Greetings everyone!

It's October and I hope you're enjoying the slightly cooler weather. I personally love autumn and am really looking forward to Halloween. It is so much fun dressing up in costumes - scary, pretty or funny.

The first article this month will help moms enjoy Halloween a little bit more. It talks about having a costume swap. Costumes are expensive!!! When most stores sell them for $14.99 and up. Buying a costume for each member of your family will make you broke in no time! Read my article for an inventive solution to this yearly problem.

The second article is purely for fun and let's face it moms can use a little fun in their lives. It discusses the gaming system Ninetendo DS. It's not just for kids anymore - really check it out :)

So enjoy the newsletter and have a spooky month!

Kim

Hold a Halloween Costume Swap and Save Big

Halloween is approaching fast and it's time to start planning what your kids will wear trick or treating. If it were up to the kids - they would have the latest character costumes that will send your wallet into hiding. Well here's a creative solution to help save you and other families you know a bunch of money.

It's called a Halloween Costume Swap Party.

Now don't get worried - I'm not talking anything complicated or fancy. Just a simple get together where families can swap costumes.

Let's face it kids grow fast! You buy them a Halloween costume one year and the next year it's too small. If you're lucky you can get 2 years out of a costume or maybe hand it down to a smaller child. Plus the price of costumes have gone up dramatically in recent years. Most thrift stores sell costumes for $5 or more and retail stores sell them for $14.99 and up. It's not unusual to find children's Halloween costumes costing $39.99 each. Ouch!

Here's how the costume swap party works.

1. Decide on a location. You can use your home, ask your church to use one of their rooms, even someone's back yard (weather permitting), etc. Any place large enough to hold a group of people and all the costumes.

2. Tell a bunch of moms you know. Create a simple flyer and hand it out at your child's preschool, elementary school, church, playdates, mom groups, neighbors, etc. The more families involved the better the selection for everyone. If you only have a few people participating make sure the kids are all about the same size - so everyone gets a new costume in return.

3. Have everyone bring their costumes early, so you can sort the costumes by size and gender. Examples include: baby, toddler, 2-4, 4-6, 6-8, 8-10, 10-12, teen, adult. When a family drops off a costume be sure to give them a ticket. One ticket for every costume gives them one ticket to pick a new costume. For example if the Jones' bring 3 costumes they will receive 3 tickets and later get to choose 3 new costumes.

4. Schedule a set meeting time for everyone to come together and pick a new costume. Maybe ask some older kids to offer face painting or to set up a coloring table for little kids. It will keep them occupied while older siblings are choosing a costume.

This idea is simple and can work for almost anyone. Save some money, get together with friends and have fun swapping costumes.

Nintendo DS for Moms

Ever get bored waiting for kids while they're at scouts? Tired of trying to make small talk with all the parents waiting to pick their kids up from school? Maybe you're work has just hit a slow time and you want something to keep from going stir crazy.

Try playing a Nintendo DS. It's a great way to keep your brain sharp, get in shape, reduce stress and have lots of fun.

Game makers have come out with lots of games made specifically for parents, so when your kids are at scouts, soccer games, football practice, gymnastics, dance lessons, or just taking a nap you can enjoy yourself also.

There are basically 4 different types of games available for you to pick from. Lets look at each type and examples of games in that group.

* Traditional Games - This includes the normal board games, television game shows, etc. Not only are these fun games but according to research these type games help keep your brain sharp as you age. Some examples include: Scrabble, Deal or No Deal, Price is Right, Crossword Puzzles, Brain Age.

* Health and Fitness - As caregivers we need to take care of our body, so we can in turn take care of our families. These games assist us in working toward that goal. Some of the wonderful games offered include: Yoga training, Pilates training, walking trainers that include activity meters, and lots more.

* Personal Improvement - Have fun while actually learning a new skill. Whether you want to learn to read music, how to cook, learn a new language or maybe you want to just dress more fashionable there are lots of games out there for you.

* Pure Entertainment - As moms, we have enough to worry about trying to raise our kids, these games off a break from reality. If you're a Grey's Anatomy fan (McDreamy anyone???) there's a video game for you. What about Hells Kitchen, Cesar Milan's Dog Whisperer, or even rock out to Monster Band.

Nintendo DS isn't just for kids. Moms you can keep your brain sharp, get in shape, reduce stress and have lots of fun with some of the games available for adults on the Nintendo DS.
