Greetings Everyone!

Summer starts this month - thank goodness!

With local schools ending in the next 2 weeks moms will have to get used to having kids around 24/7 again. My article this month touches on a new problem in society. It discusses technology and how it could be putting your child at risk.

Have fun and enjoy this month's newsletter.

Is Technology Putting Your Child at Risk?

Just this past week I took my daughter to a local park where she had a great time playing on the playground. However, while there I noticed the large number of moms and caregivers talking and texting on their cellphones - not paying any attention to their kids. Generally they were distracted.

Their kids were running outside the playground area, basically wandering off, hitting and bullying other kids and even getting hurt by falling off the equipment. The moms and caregivers seemed totally unaware and even were a bit annoyed when their kids tried to tell them anything. Pretty sad.

It's not just on the playgrounds where this sort of thing happens. Just drive down any local highway or main road to see parents talking on their cellphones while driving. Heaven forbid even texting while driving. All the while their kids are strapped in their car seats blissfully unaware of all the danger they are in.
Just look at the news recently and see all the accidents from texting and driving, little ones abducted by local sex offenders, and even the toddlers in strollers that rolled into the path of oncoming trains in Australia. Their caregivers were not around or were distracted and couldn't respond in time causing kids to get hurt.

Think about the message these distracted caregivers are sending to their kids. A message that it's okay to not really pay attention to your family. That will come back to bite their parents in the butt when they are a little older and completely ignore them and continue to play on their phones or video games.

Just remember these kids are depending on you (their parents and caregivers) to protect them. Protect them from getting hurt, being kidnapped or getting killed. We as parents need to stay on our toes and not get distracted by technology or anything else. Our kids lives are at stake.

So please let's stop putting our children at risk. Put down the cell phones, stop texting, and pay more attention to our children.

Just For Fun
Show your kids activities you did when you were little. Some suggestions include: catching fireflies, playing with silly putty, making paper hats, or just playing games outside with your friends.

Tip of the Month
Search the web for free activities in your area to do over the summer. There are free games of bowling everyday via http://www.kidsbowlfree.com/. There is also free kids movies via http://www.regmovies.com/nowshowing/familyfilmfestivalschedule.aspx. Not to mention any local playgrounds, parks and trails.

Great Site
http://www.12WeeksOfSummerFun.com
This is a new site of mine. How many times over the course of the summer have you heard your kids say "I'm Bored". Well my kids said that too much last summer, so this summer I've got it all planned out. Each week will have a theme and each day has activities, printables, and lots more for kids to do. All posted online, so feel free to follow along and have fun! It all starts Monday, June 7th, 2010.

What's Ahead
